What can I carry on a plane nowadays?

im flying from the contiguous US to alaska, stopping in canada on the way (across borders, but not the uk) so... can i still put liquids on my checked baggage? (shaving cream, toothpaste, bottle of water etc) but i cant put liquids in my carry-on bag? am i right? can i carry deoderant in my carry-on?

and i have a problem... they confiscate liquids at the gate, but what about purchasing liquids inside the gate? they dont recheck the bag before you get on the plane... do they? what if i buy a coke in the waiting area? how can they stop you from bringing some on?|||Solid deodorant - yes, gel or aerosol - no.

If you buy a Coke inside the secure area, try to carry it on and you get chosen for a follow-up check just before boarding (and they are doing more of this now) you WILL miss your flight. You'll delay everyone else while they find your checked baggage and take it off for searching, and may find some TSA Agent's large fingers in uncomfortable places.
