What is the fastests non military prop plane in the world?

I want to find out the fastest prop plane in the world thats non military. It can be single engine or multi. If you have an answer please tell me mas speed and relevant information about the plane?|||Piaggio avanti.......twin turboprop, pusher prop design, rear mounted engines, front canard design (looks kinda like a catfish) and will true 440 knots at flight level 410. nothing in the world can touch it. I'll just amend my answer for firefox below and say yes, that's book speed, but i sat right seat in one and saw 440 true at FL410.....what a ride. very stable at that speed also, a pleasure to fly.|||All credit to #1 bossman for the answer. I just thought you might be interested in the link.|||It used to be the Tu-114 (airliner cousin of the Tu-95 Bear) with 473 kts, but since thats been retired, would go for the the Piaggio Avanti II. However its classified top speed (level flight implied) is 398 kts.|||There have been some one-off, specially built aircraft for the RENO air races. Some may look like ex-military, but they are not (new designs, scratch built)|||The fastes single engine non-military a/c is the F8F Bearcat formally owned by Lyle Shelton. It was raced at the Reno airraces a number of times and still does. His record is 528MPH. The a/c is highly modified wit such changes as clipped wings and stabilizers. The engine is an R3350 formally used on a DC7. The prop is from an A model C130 turbo-prop. Ther are other mods too numerous to get into.|||To the best of my knowledge its the TU114 'Cleat'.


It was a civvie airliner version of the TU95 'Bear'. They were retired in the 70's I think though, no idea whats the fastest current prop.


I personally think It would be impossible to know though. Its much easier to mod a prop then it is a proper jet. Any number of private (rich) owners could have made any number of perfomance mods.


One aircraft that springs to mind is the 'wooden wonder'. The Mosquito was a very fast aircraft, more then 400mph at altitude and it was a true piston engine, rather then a turboprop.


Late Mk spitfires like the MkXIVe would do nearly 450mph in level flight. One even managed 600mph in a steep dive.





I know of both mosquitos and spitfires being private aircraft after the war so do they count?





Do you mean pure piston engines or Turboprops? Turboprops are essentially jet engines in the way the derive power from fuel so can operate at much higher speeds. Does it have to be a current aircraft? and do you mean at low or high altitude?
