How early does a plane start to board its passengers?

Hey all, does anyone know how much time an airline allows for passengers to board the plane before a flight, if everything is on time? 15mins?30mins? etc. thanks.|||Almost all the major airlines in the United States state on the boarding pass that boarding begins 30 minutes prior to departure.

In the case of Southwest Airlines, it is 20 minutes.

In the case of most airlines, the boarding procedure is by row, section, or group.

For example, American Airlines boards by First class, Exec. Platinum, then groups 1 through 6.

The major airlines generally board from the back of the plane forward, although with "status" you could be in row 9 and board in the first group.

In the case of Southwest Airlines, you board according to when you checked in, kind of.

The first 45 passengers to check in are in the "a" group, the next group is "b" and the final group is "c". It is "open seating" which means you can sit in any seat you want as you board, so getting in the "a" group has its advantages.|||Hi T H. Please explain why you chose this 1 best--based on your question as stated. I am trying to improve my answers, and I want to know how I could have done better answering your question. I will be checking back here for your comments.

|||That's just it Terri, we don't know, because the 'best' answer assumed domestic US flights only--but the question never stated that, so I answered according to the question as stated. Maybe the 'best' answerer is a psychic or clairvoyant?!

So anywhere from 15 minutes to half an hour.

You should arrive at the airport no less than 2 hours from boarding time.|||Usually about 30 minutes.|||they usually let elderly people, and small children board first, followed by first class passengers, then about 20-25 minutes before flight time, they allow everyone else to board.|||They usually start boarding about 30-45 minutes before plane leaves. Be at the airport 2-3 hours early though. Check in lines can be long. You may also be picked for extra screening.|||Depends. Depends on size of plane, if the aircraft arrived on time or is late, how big the plane is, how full the flight is, if you have to board busses at the gate to be taken out to the plane, etc. Generally speaking though, 30 minutes for most flights within the same country that are not on huge aircraft; 50 minutes or more for large planes and international flights.|||Most of the time when I fly, they start boarding around 20-30 minutes before the scheduled departure time. It's usually a fairly quick process.|||30 minutes is the standard.
