When you change planes does your baggage automatically go on the new plane?

I'm changing planes in LAX for a flight to Australia. I don't have to pick up my luggage or anything do I? Does it go directly to the new plane?|||Call the airline. I think you will becausse the two airlines are not partners.|||When you check in, before they take your luggage first ask the agent, then take a look at the tag put on your bag. If it is tagged to your FINAL destination you should be fine and you will see your bags at customs in Australia. Its always good to ask, but do it at the check in, DO NOT wait until you get to the gate, by that time it may be too late to make any changes to the baggage.|||If it is the same airline that you are flying with again, or an alliance of an airline, you need not bother about the bags...

otherwise, you will need to check out and then back in again to board another airplane.

Whatever it is, Approach one of the crew member or Ground staff. I am sure they willl be glad to assist...

Wishing you a Pleasant trip|||no, you do not have to worry about youre checked bags, they will be transfered to youre next flight automatically, you don't have to worry about collecting youre bags, checking them again, and going through security again. what a hassle!!|||Continental and Qantas have an interline baggage agreement as far as I know, so yes, your bags will be transferred as long as you make Continental aware that they need to be checked to Australia so they don't "short-check" the bags to LAX.

But please keep this in mind when you come back to the United States. Qantas can tag your bags back your final destination, but you will need to claim your bags in U.S. Customs at LAX, clear Customs with them ,and drop your bags in a recheck area and continue onto your Continental flight. Your bags will then be transferred to Continental after your clear customs and drop them in the recheck area.

This is mandatory, per U.S. Customs and Border Protection regulations. So don't just go through Customs without your bags or they won't show up for a couple of days. Qantas would have to clear them through customs for you and get them to Continental, which would seriously delay the bags. You'll then have to go back to the airport to pick the bags up as Qantas and/or Continental won't deliver them to you since it wasn't an airline-caused delay.|||Based on experience, you will have to collect your bags and recheck them, since you will probably arrive in a CONUS terminal, but you will be departing in the international terminal. Based on my experience, you have to recheck them at the international.

FYI, my experience was done thought the military, and it might be just their way of doing things, but going to Saudi Arabia, I had to recheck my bags in Baltimore.

When flying to Guam, I had to check them in again, but I also had an overnight stay in LAX.
